Experience Kansas Territorial and Civil War music with a narrator. This is a look into traditional songs during the beginnings of Kansas becoming a state.
The Kaw Valley Cornet Band was founded in 1987 by Rick Baker to perform for two events being held at the Kansas State Historical Society that summer – the opening of the Civil War section of the museum gallery and for the Kansas Chautauqua traveling lecture series. Rick was inspired by the Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band's performance to form a similar group that presented historical music along with an entertaining narrative. Since Rick worked at the Kansas State Historical Society at the time, he volunteered to organize a band for the events. The band has continued to this day. Though the Kaw Valley Cornet Band performs on modern instruments, trumpets instead of cornets, for example, we think of the band as a modern recreation of a small town 19th century brass band.
