Local researcher Sonja Czarnecki, will talk about Nick Chiles, the owner and editor of the Topeka Plaindealer newspaper, the largest-circulating Black newspaper in the Great Plains 1900-1930.
Researcher Sonja Czarnecki will present her research on Nick Chiles, the owner and editor of the Topeka Plaindealer. The Topeka Plaindealer was the largest-circulating Black newspaper in the Great Plains in the first three decades of the 20th century. Chiles was an entrepreneur, political boss, and civil rights activist--one of the most influential African American leaders in the region. The Plaindealer was a vehicle for activism in Topeka's Black community and beyond, sustaining the community and serving as a voice for radical political change long before the modern civil rights movement.
