A Call to Action Book Club

Join a thoughtful discussion on topics of racial justice. Everyone is welcome. This month Lisa LaRue Baker will talk about creating Land Acknowledgements. Register to attend in person or virtually.

This community book club is a partnership with the YWCA Northeast Kansas to create space for anti-racist learning, conversation and connection. We will meet at 7pm on the fourth Monday of every month (subject to change due to holidays) with a two-month topic cycle. In the first month of our meeting cycle we will have presentations, activities and other topic related items on the agenda. For our second month of the cycle we will discuss our selected book. You are welcome to attend either or both meetings as it fits with your schedule. 

For January and February our topic is Land Acknowledgements. Jan 27 Lisa LaRue Baker will present on creating Land Acknowledgements. In February we'll discuss Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Email kkriley@tscpl.org with questions or for a copy of the current book.  

In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer blends together her knowledge as a botanist and her knowledge as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. The natural world has a voice that has gone unheard by many, which Kimmerer seeks to address and change through this book. With a seamless blend of indigenous wisdom and scientific knowledge, a new light it brought to the offerings of the natural world and what we can offer it in return.
